The CALIFORNIA 78 EX was created by Onitsuka Tiger in 1978 to respond to the rise of jogging in the running market. The shoes helped runners maintain the arch of the foot while offering support for the toe. In keeping with the optimized support, the sole of the shoe also featured a wider heel for balanced support and curved to promote forward thrust.
